The Goal
100 miles has such a nice ring to it. I've never done more than 50, but in planning my first century, I discovered something too interesting to pass up -- an excuse to try 100 sooner than planned. First, the Iron Horse and Contra Costa Canal trails intersect in the shape of a pitchfork. Second, they connect with Mt. Diablo. Third, the route is exactly 100 miles. And finally, tomorrow is Halloween.
So tomorrow I attempt this treacherous track, tracing with tires both the fork and mount of the great trickster, and conquering evil with every revolution! (weather permitting)
The Route
- Start at Civic Park.
- Head north to the intersection of the Iron Horse and Contra Costa Canal trails.
- Take CCCT west and back (the left prong).
- Take IHT north and back (the center prong).
- Take CCCT east and back (the right prong), but on the return, continue on the Ygnacio Canal and Contra Costa trails.
- Take North Gate Road all the way up Mt. Diablo (something devilish).
- Retrace all the way back to the CCCT/IHT intersection.
- Take IHT south and back, ending at Civic Park (the shaft).
